Iain Bell’s love affair with the voice is evidenced by his prolific
output of vocal works, earning him the attention of many of the greatest
voices of our generation; all while still in his twenties.
Such highlights for voice and piano include ‘Day Turned into Night’,
a poignant setting of Queen Victoria’s letters and diary entries
concerning her love for Prince Albert, written for Scottish soprano
Marie McLaughlin and ‘A Cradle Suite’, a cycle of duet-lullabies
written for soprano Kate Royal and mezzo-soprano Christine Rice.
Orchestral works have followed including ‘A London Diurne’,
an orchestral song-cycle written for British baritone Christopher Maltman
and ‘The Hidden Place’, another cycle of orchestral songs
written for German soprano Diana Damrau, an artist with whom the composer
has returned to collaborate time and time again.
2007 was Bell’s début year on the world stage, yet he has already had
his works performed at such esteemed venues as the Munich Opera Festival,
Alte Oper (Frankfurt) and Wigmore Hall (London). Future plans include
a return to Wigmore Hall and the premiere of his opera 'A Harlot's Progress'
at Vienna's Theater an der Wien. Based on Hogarth's 18th century etchings,
the libretto has been penned by award-winning British author Peter Ackroyd.
